I know how much some of you love a good abscess la I know how much some of you love a good abscess lance so I deliver this cat abscess in probably one of the worst locations - the point of the hock (ankle) 😿 Any swollen, warm, painful swelling on your pet is suspicious for a possible abscess especially if there is history of trauma such as an animal bite. After draining the majority of the pus we flushed the pocket copiously with a diluted chlorhexidine solution. Unfortunately this has to stay open to allow continued draining of the infection, but kitty is on antibiotics and some good pain medications 💊 #abscess #pus #veterinarian #notyouraveragevet #pets #vetstagram #vetsofinstagram #vetreels #fyp

What is gingival hyperplasia? Simply put, it is overgrowth of the gums. Why it happens? We are not entirely sure. We suspect there is a genetic component, hence few breeds being the main victims; however, we also know that certain drugs can cause this. Is this harmful? Directly it is not harmful condition, but indirectly this leads to severe dental disease. Surgical treatment is recommended for those that are this bad to prevent worsening of dental disease. You can that this pup has many teeth you can barely see before the procedure. There were even a few that had been completely engulfed by the gums. If you look at the bottom incisors they Have all moved and are swimming in gingival tissue. This patient was so severely affected by the gingival hyperplasia and dental disease that I had to stage his oral surgery into two procedures. Moving to Canada has definitely made me feel it, but I wouldn’t have it any other way! Although I do miss my family and my culture dearly I’m happy to be able to share this part of me with another part of the world. Photo dump: a week of locuming in Grande Prairie @ Photo dump: a week of locuming in Grande Prairie @bearcreekac 🤩 There were very few, if any, dull moments last week and I was okay with it. I’m not usually one to bring the shit storm but it sounds like I came with a lot of ‘interesting’ cases 😹 The week round up: -Several skin cytologies -Lots of ear cytologies -Liver ultrasound -Swollen toe on the first crazy (and super cute) whippet with possible tiny avulsion fracture -Some puppy microchips because of new ‘Merica travel requirements -Fractured teeth -Puppy malocclusions and persistent baby teeth -Bladder stones (that I could feel on palpation) -Huge bladder mass on a senior dog that needed euthanasia -Cat with intestinal tumor -HBC 1 year old Maremma 😢 -Cat with ocular foreign body (we suspect a pellet) -First boosters on a litter of 8 puppies (golden doodles 😍) -Premature dystocia that passed 3 puppies with the help of oxytocin but needed a c-section for the last 3 -Dog neuter / cat spay -Toe mast cell tumor on a sweet boxer And that’s all I can remember 😮‍💨 I think I’m ready for ER medicine 😂 One of the pros/cons with small town vets is that you kinda have to do it all. The closest ER is probably 5 hours away so you either buck up and figure it out or your patients may not do well. Bigger cities have the luxury of many ER clinics but this also makes it easy to refer cases. I think this hinders growth in new grad general practice vets and they miss out on opportunities to learn from handling new cases. HAPPY MONDAY 🐶 Although we hate giving pets mor HAPPY MONDAY 🐶 Although we hate giving pets more than one problem sometimes that’s just the way it goes 😏 Meet Jackson, the bravest handsome, and of course fur baby to an RVT @_mohxo This week he is having surgery for: 1. Splenectomy to remove the mass on the spleen. *May be an unpopular opinion but when I see a mass/tumor on spleens on a healthy pet I usually recommend a splenectomy sooner rather than later. WHY? Because I rather take a healthy pet who will likely recover with less complications to surgery over a pet who now has a bleeding mass in its abdomen and is higher risk for surgery and more likely to have complications. 2. GOLPP - Geriatric Onset Laryngeal Paralysis Polyneuropathy This condition, as the name suggests, affects older patients (8-13 years of age). It’s also mostly seen in Labradors but can also affect other medium to large breed dogs. Symptoms include increased noisy breathing from the throat (sounds worse when panting), breathing worsens with heat/hot weather, exercise intolerance, gagging, hind end weakness. This condition leads to degeneration of the nerves that control the muscles that move the laryngeal cartilages. When the laryngeal cartilages are not moving normally airflow through the trachea is disrupted as a result of them not being able to open during inspiration. Treatment involves a ‘tie-back’ surgery where one of the laryngeal cartilages is sutured open to allow for better air flow.
