Tampons are multi-taskers! and an important part o Tampons are multi-taskers! and an important part of any dental cleaning or surgery. Prior to tampons, and something many clinics still do, the use of roll gauze or packed gauze at the back of the mouth was/is used to prevent water from leaking into the lungs. We use a lot of water during dental cleanings and dental surgery so it is important that we protect the airways and prevent aspiration, which is a possible complication. This little one weighs just 1.8 kg, which means we have to be extra careful about his blood sugar levels — especially when fasting before surgery. That’s why we keep dextrose on hand and closely monitor their glucose levels to prevent dangerous drops. Small breed dogs, especially those under 2 kg, are at a higher risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) due to their limited glycogen stores and high metabolic rate. Hypoglycemia can lead to: • Lethargy, weakness, and tremors • Seizures • Hypothermia • Coma or even death if untreated We checked his blood glucose levels just before sedation and they were a bit in the low end at 3.9 so we decided to give him some oral dextrose (sugar water) to help stabilize level and prevent them from going lower. We could also put sterile dextrose into their IV fluids but luckily this little one did great with just a touch of the oral stuff. Post surgery blood sugar (also known as blood glucose) was 10.9 so we did not need to supplement him with any additional dextrose, just his usual meals and snacks! #tinybreeds #minimaltese #toybreeds #hypoglycemia #vetmed #veterinarian #surgerydays #notyouraveragevet #locumvet #vetstagram #vetsofinstagram

Don’t let the adorable faces hijack your physica Don’t let the adorable faces hijack your physical exam! Did you catch the problem? This puppy corgi is probably one of the cutest patients of the day and he has the best personality! Two things that can easily side track the little details of an exam. Okay, maybe three. He is also the wiggliest little guy! Which can make a physical exam, especially an oral exam that much more difficult. There were no concerns from his human. He is eating normally, playing normally, and doing all the normal puppy things. BUT REMEMBER dogs and cats compensate and adjust very easily. If you didn’t catch it, this kid has quite the overbite. Your vet might call it a Class 2 Malocclusion. You would think overbites/underbites are pretty harmless, however if you look closer you can see his baby canines making contact with his upper gums. OUCH! He’s also using his tongue as a buffer between his lower incisors and the roof of his mouth. The good news is that this is something we can improve, but it usually involves a trip to the vet dentist. With dental month coming up, it is a great reminder to not neglect your pet’s oral health.
